TRANSPORT 2012

Transport lies at the core of an increasing number of debates in our society. Its fast development has generated its fair share of issues and, as time passes, more new challenges appear: oil is getting scarcer, CO2 emissions are likely to increase by 120% by 2050, congestion is getting even more acute and infrastructure is getting old. Some call those challenges problems; we see them as opportunities for creativity and bold initiatives. Transport in the twenty-first century has to be completely reinvented! As an international law firm based in Belgium, we felt that we could not miss the opportunity to make our own contribution!
Efficient transport is vital for any modern society. Even more so in Belgium where transport significantly contributes to the economic welfare of the country: according to some sources, it accounts to more than 20% of GDP. Therefore, our country has a major role to play in the redefinition of transport policies both in Europe and worldwide.
The objective of this seminar is twofold: we first want to identify the main challenges that our society will be facing in the next fifty years, without naivety or fatalism. We also wish to bring strong opinions to the table and devise concrete solutions that will prove efficient in the long run.
Our seminar will be prepared by various think tanks made up of experts and stakeholders. They will help us define the challenges and prepare a road book for the seminar with legal and non legal aspects and perspectives.
